Fortinet Turned $1,000 Into $24,579 in a Decade While the S&P 500 Delivered $3,585
• Fortinet stock surged 127.87% YTD after a two-year slump, far outpacing the S&P 500.
• Q2 FY26 product revenue rose 52%; full-year guidance raised to $8.02B-$8.18B.
• Stock trades at 63x earnings, above analysts' $164.32 average target of $180.95.
Fortinet (NASDAQ:FTNT) makes the FortiGate firewall, which inspects network traffic and blocks attacks. Public since 2009 and still led by founder Ken Xie, the company built its own FortiASIC chips rather than relying on third-party silicon, betting on a long payback period Xie says eventually pays off. It expanded into cloud security (SASE) and AI-driven operations, acquiring Lacework and Linksys, pushing FY25 revenue to $6.80B and free cash flow to $2.21B.
A $1,000 investment a decade ago would be worth $24,578.90 today (2,357.89% return), well ahead of the S&P 500's $3,585.10. But the path was rocky: shares fell to $59.60 in October 2021 and languished at $79.41 by the end of 2025 as firewall upgrade demand slowed in 2023-2024. Since then, the stock has jumped 127.87% year to date, meaning investors who sold during the downturn missed most of the five-year gain.
The turnaround was driven by Q2 FY26 results: product revenue grew 52%, billings rose 33%, and management raised full-year revenue guidance to $8.02B-$8.18B on demand from AI workload security and ransomware defense.
Bulls point to a 38% non-GAAP operating margin, FortiSASE billings growth exceeding 100%, and six straight quarters of EPS beats. Bears note the stock trades at 63x trailing earnings and, at $180.95, sits above the average analyst target of $164.32 — with 31 hold ratings versus eight buys and one strong buy. Competition from Palo Alto Networks (NASDAQ:PANW), Zscaler (NASDAQ:ZS), and Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) remains intense.
Fortinet's business has earned its strong run, but after more than doubling in a year, the stock's valuation already reflects much of that performance. Product revenue growth and billings versus the raised guidance are the key metrics to watch next.
